Labor Day signifies the unofficial end of summer, and with it comes the promise of cooler weather! If your landscape is home to a beautiful koi pond, it’s time to start thinking about preparing your pond and koi for the changing season. Winter will be here before you know it, and it’s important to ensure the health of your pond and fish for years to come. Discover how you can prepare your koi pond for fall and winter with tips from Matthews Construction & Design!

It Starts in the Fall

As air temperatures begin to drop, water temperatures do as well. As the temperature starts to adjust to the fall season, your fish and ponds require different care than during the summer. Falling leaves might seem beautiful, but they can cause harm to your fish and the overall health of your pond. Each morning, skim your pond of any fallen leaves or debris with a fine net.

In Maryland, water temperatures begin to dip during September and October, which means your fish require a new diet. As the water temperature decreases, the fishes’ metabolism is also reduced, and they do not need to feed as often. Generally, a wheat-germ diet is recommended for most koi species.

Consider a Pond Net

As mentioned above, it’s essential to clean the pond of any debris such as fallen leaves. A pond net can help reduce the amount of maintenance required every week. Experts recommend fastening the net around the edges of the pond to prevent leaves from entering underneath of it. Homeowners with frog inhabitants should leave a small opening to provide the frogs with access to the pond. Watch the net as the season progresses, and make sure that it doesn’t sag into the pond or overflow with leaves.
