Winter is Coming: Seasonal Koi Pond Care

Winter is Coming: Seasonal Koi Pond Care

If this is your first winter maintaining a koi pond, you may not know where to begin. Properly caring for your koi pond can ensure that your fish are healthy and comfortable throughout the season.

The first day of winter is still a few weeks away, but the temperature is quickly dropping here in Maryland. If this is your first winter maintaining a koi pond, you may not know where to begin. Properly caring for your koi pond can ensure that your fish are healthy and comfortable throughout the season. Learn about winter koi care, and call the professionals at Matthews Construction & Design for more information!

Diet and Feeding Schedule

As the seasons begin to change, your fish begin to have different dietary needs. During spring and summer, the water temperatures of your koi pond are significantly high. During the warmer months, fish require a frequent diet high in protein to encourage healthy growth. However, during the winter months, fish are unable to digest food as quickly as they would during the spring and summer. Uneaten and undigested food can pollute the water in your koi pond and harm your fish. Now is an excellent time to start feeding your fish less frequently to lower their metabolism in preparation for winter.

Maintaining Oxygen Levels

Your koi pond will freeze during the winter months, but it’s important that the bottom does not freeze completely. Ensure that there is an air hole on the pond’s surface so that your fish can survive the winter. An overaccumulation of carbon dioxide can poison your fish. If your koi pond is on the larger side, you may want to purchase a de-icer or aeration pump to reduce the amount of maintenance you need to complete each week.

Ask for Professional Assistance

New pond owners often need professional assistance to ensure that their pond is in good shape for the winter. Matthews Construction & Design has designed and installed quality landscape elements like koi ponds for nearly 50 years. Our team can take care of all preventative measures to ensure that the fish are thriving and comfortable! Our safety measures start with the installment of a mechanical filter to circulate and pump oxygen into the water.
