The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler. It’s time to unpack those wool sweaters and fold up our linen shorts because winter is coming. What are you doing to prepare your home and property for the changing season? What precautions are you taking to ensure that you can withstand the harsh months ahead? How are you taking care of your fish friends? At Matthews Home and Construction, we urge you to take proper care of your koi ponds.
Feeding your Fish Friends
The changing seasons directly correlate with your pond fish’s eating schedule. During the summer months, it’s important that their diet is rich in protein and that they’re being fed regularly. When the temperature begins to drop, your fish should be fed wheat germ and Cool Water Food, and they should be fed less regularly. When the temperature drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, you should stop feeding your fish completely. The fat reserves built during the summer will sustain your koi throughout the winter.
Don’t Break the Ice
Your ponds need ventilation but resist the urge to break the ice as this will lead to a harmful environment for your fish. Rather, maintain a ventilation hole. All you need to keep your fish happy and healthy are two small holes for the air bubbles to escape. The rest of the ice can stay. An aerator running in your pond is another great way to oxygenate the water while also reducing ice buildup.
When it becomes very cold, your pond may be at risk of freezing over completely. This may require that you install a de-icer to keep at least part of the water above freezing.
