If you’re thinking about a remodeling project in your Montgomery County home, you probably have big dreams about what you want. Depending on the type of remodeling project you’re considering, there could be a lot of decisions to make. Read on for some tips to help get you through the major steps of any remodeling project.
Start with the Basics
The first step is to turn your dreams into a solid plan. Think about what you need in the space, what you want, and what you can do without. List all of this out along with any blueprints and design sketches you have. This should also be when you start to investigate local zoning laws and regulations to see what you are allowed to do. Don’t apply for permits yet, but keep a list of the ones you’re going to need.
Find Your Contractor
When you begin narrowing down the list of possible contractors, start asking questions. The temptation will be to leave the decision up to price alone, but there is more to consider. Take into account the experience of the contractor, how many years they’ve been working, and their reputation and references. They should also be certified, licensed, and insured.
Set Your Timeline
Once you choose your contractor, work with them to establish a timeline that you can live with. If you are going to have to move out of your home, you will want that to be as short a time as possible. If you have a very firm end goal, like the holiday season, make sure your contractor is aware of that. The timeline you build should include time for prep and cleanup and account for the possibility of delays and delivery hiccups.
Relocate Your Things (And Possibly Yourselves)
Depending on the scope of the project, you may have to completely move out of your home for a time. Most home remodels, however, only require that you vacate a room or two during the construction process. If you are remodeling your kitchen, where will you cook and eat while the work is being done? If you’re remodeling a bathroom, do you have a spare toilet and shower you can use?
